Mid-Infrared Diode Lasers Between 1800 nm and 2500 nm
Applications
in the mid-infrared

In the fields of direct materials processing as well as laser surgery and therapy, there is an increasing interest in laser systems emitting at wavelengths in the mid-infrared. This is based on their special absorption characteristics.

In contrast to GaAs-based diode lasers or Nd:YAG lasers in the wavelength regime of around 1µm, the energy of the laser beam at 2µm is absorbed by the chemical bondings of the thermoplastic material itself.

The absorption of laser radiation at this wavelength in the volume of the material results in a direct and immediate heating and melting of components. This means that no color pigments or other additives are necessary. There is a high application potential for these lasers in laser surgery and therapy due to the absorption characteristics of water and biological tissues containing water around wavelengths of 2µm.

In addition, optical pump sources for laser systems emitting in the 2-4µm wavelength range (e.g. Ho:YAG) and military applications, such as infrared countermeasures, are addressed.

For special applications such as trace gas spectroscopy or spectroscopy in liquids or for medical diagnostics we offer tunable diode lasers between 2000 nm and 2300 nm

MIR high power diode lasers based on GaSb
The (AlGaIn)(AsSb) material system epitaxially grown on GaSb substrates has been established as an ideal basis for the realization of type-I diode lasers in the 1850-2500nm wavelength regime. Different variants such as single emitters or laser bars are available. In cooperation with our partner companies, we offer our customers also fiber-coupled modules based on our lasers. Also customized laser systems like laser stacks for pumping applications have been realized already. In contrast to well established solid-state lasers used so far, diode laser technology offers great benefits for the above mentioned applications:

  • compact and efficient light sources
  • wavelengths tunable by current and temperature
  • power scalability by bar and stack technology
  • long lifetimes
  • maintenance-free
